The Diabetes & Endocrine Center of Orlando, P.A.

My medical career might have started at a young age with my reputation of being a math and science nerd in grade school, but being called names did not deter me from being the first one in my extended family to escape very humble beginnings and go to college.  Starting as a premedical student at the University of Florida and graduating from Occidental College in Los Angeles, I returned to Florida and attended medical school at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.  At graduation, my classmates teased me about getting two degrees;  medical and Mrs. degrees after marrying my classmate, Dr. John Huhn.  We matched our residencies at the University of Virginia and I completed Internal Medicine training and then attained one of two coveted  endocrine fellowship positions at UVA; one of the nation’s top programs in Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Leaving the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1992, we moved to my husband’s hometown where I joined the Diabetes & Endocrine Center of Orlando and remain there today as an owner.  My full-service endocrine practice specializes in state-of-the-art evaluation and management of adults with diabetes, pre-diabetes/metabolic syndrome, thyroid and parathyroid conditions, obesity, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome and conditions related to pituitary and adrenal gland abnormalities.  We use a patient-centered team approach to deliver comprehensive care in which providers work together with medical assistances, diabetes nurse educators, dietary counselors, a thyroid ultrasonographer and lab technicians operating our onsite fully licensed and accredited laboratory.

For diabetes management, we provide patient specific diabetes education, diagnostic continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to assess diet and medication effects on glucose trends, insulin pump therapy and personal CGM training with in-office educators.  We have a personalized weight loss program using delicious ITG diet products and body composition analysis.  Our newest “lab” assistant position was filled by Holly, my English Labrador retriever who lifts patients’ and staff spirits and makes sure I get my daily exercise.

Tangible accomplishments I’ve earned during my career, like medical degrees, becoming a Fellow in the American College of Endocrinology, and receiving Top Doctor awards among others are important to me, but even more gratifying is seeing my diabetic patients achieve excellent blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels granting them a longer, healthier life free from complications or getting that woman’s call reporting she’s pregnant after restoring normal thyroid or pituitary hormone levels. No trophy replaces the satisfaction of rendering a college student cancer free after early identification of a cancerous thyroid nodule by ultrasound or alleviating the burden of multiple insulin shots and finger stick glucose tests after my Type 1 diabetic obtains an integrated insulin pump system. These outcomes and more are the accomplishments this science nerd appreciates!
