Shepard, Smith, Kohlmyer & Hand, P.A.
Drew Smith is a founding member of Shepard, Smith, Kohlmyer and Hand, P.A., a boutique firm specializing in local government law. Board certified by the Florida Bar in City, County, and Local Government Law since 2008, Drew brings a deep understanding of the wide range of legal challenges that municipalities throughout the state face. He currently serves as the City Attorney for the Cities of Flagler Beach and Edgewood and Assistant City Attorney for multiple other municipalities the firm represents. He also works with homeowners’ and condominium associations, businesses, and individuals in central Florida who are looking for strategic guidance on corporate governance, property rights, and land use related issues.
Beyond his legal acumen, Drew is known for his unwavering dedication to his clients. He approaches each matter with honesty, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to achieving optimal outcomes for the clients and communities he serves. He firmly believes a lawyer’s most important skill is the ability to listen and, in every project he takes on, the client’s needs and goals are always his priority. His reputation for integrity and professionalism has earned him the trust and respect of both his clients and colleagues in the industry.
Growing up in rural Louisiana, Drew learned the critical role of local government at an early age. The importance of institutions where citizens have direct access to their elected officials cannot be understated and must never be taken for granted. The values instilled in him long before he considered a legal career guided his academic pursuits. Drew majored in English Literature with minors in Philosophy and Political Science at Mercer University. While there, he spent a semester abroad at Oxford University, studying Shakespeare and Nineteenth Century German Philosophy. After graduating Magna cum Laude from Mercer, Drew went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 2002.
Outside of work, Drew enjoys spending time with his wife, Kathryn, and their two rescue dogs, Gilly and Harley-Quinn. A lifelong animal lover, he supports several local animal rescues in addition to the various central Florida charities and organizations with which the firm volunteers. In his artistic pursuits, Drew indulges in creative writing, crafting short fiction and poetry. With an acoustic guitar in hand, he also channels his creativity into composing and performing original songs. On those occasions when the central Florida heat subsides, Drew relishes exploring the outdoors, often finding inspiration at the intersection where humanity meets nature. Reflecting on his formative years, educational background, and a distinguished legal career spanning over two decades, Drew finds a certain amused satisfaction seeing that life has brought him exactly where he was meant to be all along.
