Derek Hough is more than just a world-class dancer—he’s a storyteller, a fighter, and now, a cherished part of the Runway to Hope magic. On May 17th, the six-time Dancing with the Stars champion and four-time Emmy Award winner will co-host our 13th Annual Runway to Hope Spring Soirée at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, standing beside our beloved returning host, Johnny Magic. Together, they promise a night of purpose, power, and unforgettable moments.

“Behind every performance, there’s a story.  And behind every spotlight, there’s love.”— Derek Hough

Best known for his dazzling footwork and inventive choreography, Derek has received 14 Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Choreography, winning four. His most recent win, in 2024 for Michael Bublé’s “Higher,” came during a deeply personal time. As his wife, Hayley Erbert, recovered from emergency brain surgery, Derek dedicated the award to her, honoring her incredible strength and resilience. It was a reminder that behind every performance, there’s a story. And behind every spotlight, there’s love. That’s exactly what makes Derek’s involvement with Runway to Hope so meaningful. At our Spring Soirée, we pair pediatric cancer warriors, our true stars of the night, with celebrity escorts to walk the runway and shine. But it’s not just about fashion or fame. It’s about lifting spirits, building confidence, and celebrating these incredible kids for exactly who they are: fighters, dreamers, and inspirations.

For those who don’t know, Runway to Hope is a Central Florida nonprofit devoted to supporting children and families impacted by pediatric cancer. Runway to Hope is committed to providing direct emergency assistance, funding vital Central Florida hospital programs, and standing in the gap where help is most needed. The Spring Soirée is their signature event with 2500 supporters in attendance. It’s part fashion and entertainment, part celebration, part awareness, and all heart.  This year, with Derek Hough lending his voice, spirit, and love of dance to the evening, we’re reminded how powerful it is when people use their platforms for good. His energy is infectious, and his heart is open.

Whether you’re attending in person or supporting from afar, this night is about the Runway to Hope kids. It’s about community. And with Derek leading the way, we know it’s going to be a night to remember.

Here’s my exclusive Orlando Style Interview with Derek Hough:

You’ve worn many hats as dancer, choreographer, Emmy-winner, now co-host for one of Orlando’s most impactful pediatric cancer events. What drew you to Runway to Hope and their mission?

You know, at the end of the day, the real secret to living is giving. Being able to lend my time and energy to a cause like Runway to Hope is a privilege and an honor. What drew me to their mission is how they genuinely do good for those who need it most, and I’m happy to be part of something that serves such a meaningful purpose.

You’ve inspired so many through movement and storytelling. What do you hope your presence brings to the children walking the runway this year?

For me, I just want to give these incredible kids a moment to truly shine, to feel all the love from the audience, and to be encouraged in their journey. I’ll be their cheerleader.

You and your wife, Hayley, have been through such a powerful journey this past year. How has that shaped the way you approach moments like this—celebrating courage and resilience in young fighters?

What my wife and I went through last year was life-changing, and it taught us so much about collective love and the power of community. When people come together, whether in a neighborhood, an event like this, or even a whole country, it’s incredibly healing. We felt that firsthand and appreciate it so much. Being here is a privilege, and we honor these brave kids who are fighting.

You’ve danced on stages around the world and performed in front of millions. How does standing beside these children and being part of their story compared to all those spotlight moments?

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a long career, from competing around the world to television shows, and I’m proud of those accomplishments. But Being able to stand alongside these kids and serve in any way possible is truly fulfilling. Being with them is an honor.

You’ll be celebrating your 40th birthday while co-hosting Runway to Hope’s Spring Soirée. That’s such a meaningful way to mark a milestone. what does it mean to you to spend this moment surrounded by children and families who embody such strength?

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my 40th birthday than being here with these incredible warriors. It’s humbling and emotional to be in a room filled with such strength and resilience.

My deepest wish is for these kids to have the chance to live full lives and celebrate their own milestones. That’s what this is all about.

We’re so excited that Derek Hough is giving Orlando Style Magazine this exclusive interview just days before the big night. Be sure to check back next month as we share our favorite photos, memories, and moments from this year’s Spring Soirée.
