Dr. James Michael Burkett, President of NUC University Florida Technical College (NUC FTC) and The DAVE School, is reshaping the landscape of higher education. Known for his visionary leadership, Dr. Burkett has built NUC FTC into an institution that emphasizes opportunity, innovation, and impact. His journey, spanning roles in academia, law enforcement, and the Marine Corps, embodies resilience and adaptability—qualities he regards as essential to his success. “The most important lesson I’ve learned is the power of perseverance,” says Dr. Burkett, a principle that has anchored his leadership philosophy. His commitment to aligning education with economic needs has made NUC FTC a player in workforce development. Through the creation of a talent pipeline that meets Florida’s demands, he has helped bridge the state’s skills gap, fueling industry growth. This year, he introduced the School of Nursing to enhance NUC University’s program offerings, support workforce diversity in healthcare, and address the urgent demand for nurses in Florida. FTC Cares, a corporate social responsibility program he founded in 2018, has strengthened NUC FTC’s role as a community cornerstone. Through partnerships with businesses, civic groups, and educational organizations, FTC Cares fosters a positive impact across Florida, extending the institution’s influence well beyond its campuses. His dedication to diversity and community development has earned him numerous accolades, including the Don Quixote Hispanic Champion Award. His commitment to inclusivity has also led him to serve on the Prospera Regional Board, Orlando Family Stage Board, and other influential organizations. Under Dr. Burkett’s leadership, NUC FTC has broadened its program offerings to include online, hybrid, and blended learning models, as well as new graduate programs, enhancing flexibility and accessibility for working adults.
