Jaya B. Kumar, M.D., FASRS, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. Her impressive education and training began at Saint Louis University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science with Honors and earned her medical degree. 

Her most notable merits included induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society and Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Kumar then excelled during her internship in internal medicine at Saint Louis University where she was awarded Intern of the Year. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Duke University where she was the recipient of the Isbey Award for excellence in clinical care, ethics and research. Following her residency training, Dr. Kumar completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Kumar has strived to enhance her knowledge in the field of ophthalmology while providing evidence-based patient care. She continues to participate as a sub-investigator in numerous ongoing clinical trials and has authored several book chapters, contributed and published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Jaya Kumar is continuously selected as featured speaker and at local and national meetings including American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Vit Buckle Society, Women in Ophthalmology, among many others. She lectures locally at several continuing education events for optometrists and ophthalmic technicians.  

Dr. Kumar is passionate about physician wellness. Through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, she continues to lead health care workers in the Orlando community to advocate for mental health awareness and prevent physician burn out. She continues to mentor trainees through the AAO minority program and Women in Ophthalmology. She is also committed to international health outreach and has volunteered with the Eye Health Institute to provide in-depth eye care to the underserved populations in Jamaica.

Dr. Kumar is dedicated to providing personalized and compassionate care to each and every one of her patients. Her goals are to reassure and educate her patients about their conditions while getting to know them on a personal level. She offers the latest technology to treat vitreoretinal conditions and tailors treatment to each patient. “To me, the most important aspect of being a good retina specialist is helping my patients maintain their vision and independence.”
