Board Certified Ophthalmologist, Eye Florida
Dr. Ly T Nguyen is a first generation board certified Ophthalmologist and the only medical doctor in her family. She is also amongst the first board certified Ophthalmologist from her home village in An Bang, Hue, Vietnam, to graduate from a United States training program. Known for her humble and compassionate approach to patient care, she is one of the most respected cataract surgeons in Central Florida by both her patients and her peers.
Reflecting on her life, many signs point to her path in the field of ophthalmology. Growing up in the countryside in Vietnam, she developed night blindness due to malnutrition. While she was still in college at Brown University, her father developed early cataracts due to the harsh sun as a long-line commercial fisherman. These personal experiences shaped Dr. Nguyen’s passion and mission in helping her patients see better.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honors and Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Ethics at Brown University, Dr. Nguyen completed her medical training and preliminary surgery internship at the John A Burn’s School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She completed her ophthalmology training at the University of Colorado Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute and was awarded the Resident Research Awards.
Dr. Nguyen specializes in cataract, oculoplastics, and minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). In addition, she enjoys performing aesthetics procedures including Fraxel laser ablation, Botox injection and Dermal Fillers for facial rejuvenation. At Eye Florida, her solo private practice in St. Cloud, Dr. Nguyen is able to offer a number of medical and surgical eye services with easy accessibility and professionalism, including comprehensive and emergency eye care, wellness screening for macular degeneration diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. With the state-of-the art technology including Virtual Visual Field Testing and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography, Eye Florida is able to provide comprehensive diagnostic eye testing for many eye conditions —always with a focus on exceptional patient care in an inviting environment.
She is an internationally recognized doctor, author, and speaker with publications in peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She has served in many leadership position including Chairperson for Department of Surgery at Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and Board of Trustee Member for St. Cloud Regional Medical Center. Dr. Nguyen is a co-founding member of the An Bang Professionals, a non-profit organization committed to providing financial assistance to promising high school graduates and underserved communities in the United States and aboard.
Dr. Nguyen is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She has received numerous awards, including Best of Osceola, Top Doctors and Best of Florida as well as being voted as Orlando Style’s Elite Doctors, Top Eye Doctors, and Women of the Year.
She lives in Orlando with her family and her two Shih-Tzu Mix dogs Rome and Aspen. She enjoys spending time traveling, reading, and doing family activities.
When asked to share some memorable cases in her career, Dr. Nguyen spoke about a case of a young mother who was legally blind due to mature cataracts and insurance delays. By the time this young mother was referred to Dr. Nguyen, many had feared that her sight was permanently lost. Dr. Nguyen performed the cataract surgery and soon after, the mother was able to see! During her follow-up visit with Dr. Nguyen, she was overjoyed with tears and shared openly, “Now I can finally see my son’s face. It has been many years I have not seen his face and now I can watch him grow up.” Reflecting back on this Dr. Nguyen states, “We often take our gift of sight for granted and experiences like these allows me to make a difference in my patient’s life.”
