Dr. Mariel Szapiel is a board-certified neurosurgeon with advanced expertise in functional neurosurgery and the surgical treatment of both brain and spine disorders. Her practice focuses on movement disorders and epilepsy, using innovative techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), laser ablation, and focused ultrasound. She also provides expert care for brain tumors and other complex intracranial conditions, along with comprehensive spinal surgery using minimally invasive, robotic, and AI-assisted technologies.
Dr. Szapiel trained at The Ohio State University and the University of Puerto Rico, where she became the first Puerto Rican woman accepted into a U.S. neurosurgery residency program.
