Criminal Defense Attorney
Rachel Mattie is a first-generation high school graduate, college student, and attorney. Born in Detroit, Michigan to two young parents, Rachel understood from an early age that she would need to pave her own way if she wished to break generational cycles. As the eldest of three daughters, she naturally stepped into roles of leadership and advocacy, traits that would become the cornerstone of her legal career.
Rachel began her journey in the courtroom as a public defender, where she gained not only trial experience but a deep well of compassion and empathy for those navigating the justice system. It was during those early years that she learned the importance of listening closely, fighting fiercely, and treating every client with dignity and respect.
Now, with over a decade of experience in criminal defense, Rachel serves as the Managing Attorney at The Umansky Law Firm. In this role, she continues to champion the rights of the accused while also mentoring her fellow attorneys and helping the firm grow.
Rachel believes that the majority of defendants lack a true understanding of how the system works. She is dedicated to not only results, but empowerment through education. Rachel is known for her exceptional communication skills and unwavering commitment to her clients. She believes every client deserves not only strong legal representation, but also to feel heard, valued, and understood. She lives by the principle that each case—no matter how big or small—should be of the utmost importance to her team in that moment.
Whether she’s arguing in court or speaking with a client’s concerned family, Rachel brings a rare blend of skill, heart, and grit to the legal profession. Her journey from humble beginnings to courtroom leader is not just a personal success story—it’s a testament to what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
