Neurosurgery

Dr. Torres is a nationally recognized neurotrauma and neurocritical care expert often called to moderate neurosurgical scientific sessions, working closely with the industry in advancing new technology for treating traumatic brain injury. He believes that the future is built based on past experience. He is one of a handful of triple fellowship-trained, Board-certified neurosurgeons in the state of Florida. His fellowships are in Neuro-oncology (Brain and Spine tumors), Complex Spine including minimally invasive, Endoscopic Era and Robotic Spine Surgery, and Neuropathology.

Dr. Torres was born in Peru and came to this country as a child. He was educated both abroad and at The University of Chicago and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a residency in Neuropathology and General Surgery internship, all at Columbia University. He then pursued prestigious fellowships in Neurosurgical Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Complex Spine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Torres has spent most of his career in Academic Neurosurgery, initially as an Assistant and later as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University Medical Center in California for many years. He then moved to Florida, where he was an Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and then the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. After almost 30 years in academics, he moved to Orlando to start a boutique neurosurgery practice, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. Dr. Torres is currently also a volunteer faculty member at the new UCF Medical School in Lake Nona as a Professor of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Torres has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including “Hyperosmolar Therapy” in Congress Quarterly; “Thoracolumbar Vertebral Body Replacement: Materials & Techniques” in Contemporary Neurosurgery; and “Non–Neoplastic Pineal Cysts” in the Journal of Neurology. In 2012, he received the Arthur L. Bloomfield Award for Teaching Excellence in Clinical Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His professional memberships have included the Neuro-Critical Care Society, Alaska Brain Injury Network, American Association of Neuropathologists, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, American Brain Injury Consortium, California Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, New York State Medical Society, North American Spine Society, and the American Medical Association.

Growing up, Dr. Torres was very close to his grandmother, and when he was about five years old, she passed away after having surgery on a brain tumor in his native Peru. Because of that incident, he wanted to learn more about the surgery and about the brain, which he found fascinating. Attributing his success to hard work and perseverance, he proudly states that America is the best and freest country in the world where an immigrant can come and follow his dreams. He considers receiving the Arthur L. Bloomfield Award at Stanford one of his career highlights. Both Dr. Torres and his wife are Air Force vets, and their practice, ADVANCED NEUROSURGICAL TECHNOLOGIES, is a vet-owned business with offices in Lake Nona and Kissimmee.
