As spring slowly approaches, it brings a terrible side effect: allergies. Did you know seasonal allergies affect our pets just as badly as they affect us? Here are four signs your pet could be suffering from seasonal allergies:

Constant scratching
If your pet has allergies, their skin will become very itchy. For dogs and cats, their allergies more often take the form of skin irritation or inflammation, a condition referred to as allergic dermatitis. Pets will most likely start scratching excessively due to the itchiness, and they might even bite at certain areas of their bodies. They may also rub themselves against some surfaces like the carpet, furniture, or wall.

Irritated skin
As a result of all the itching and scratching, your pet’s skin may become extremely irritated. Just like humans, pets can break out in rashes if they’ve been exposed to something that they’re allergic to. Pay close attention to the areas around their paws, as well as the belly. If you notice any red, irritated skin, it’s most likely a sign of allergies.

Continual licking
If your pet is constantly licking parts of their bodies, it could be that something in their environment is bothering them. Your pet will do anything to try to reduce itching, including licking their skin. Unfortunately, biting, licking and scratching can cause open sores and scabs. Sores can become infected, which can result in making your pet even more uncomfortable.

Rubbing ears frequently
Pets with allergies also tend to have problems with their ears. The ear canals could become itchy and inflamed, as well as infected with yeast or bacteria. This may lead to hair loss around the ears, head tilting, or constant ear scratching. For cats and dogs, symptoms of ear infections include scratching, odor, discharge, redness, swelling, and crusts or scabs.
