Dr Yassar Chakfe is an accomplished neuroscientist and distinguished neurologist and neuromuscular specialist. He founded the Brain & Nerve Center in 2011 to provide Central Florida residents exceptional and individualized neurologic care. With over 25 years of combined expertise in neurologic care and research, Dr Chakfe has positioned his practice in the forefront of neurology providers in Central Florida. He utilizes state of the art technology and diagnostic tools combined with up-to-date evidence-based Medicine to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and formulate an effective care plan individualized to each patient. He believes in the importance of educating his patients about their neurologic conditions and treatment options to help them receive the most appropriate treatment and ensure their compliance with it. Dr Chakfe enjoys managing patients with challenging neurologic presentations often referred by other providers to out-of-town tertiary medical centers.
As a Harvard-trained clinical neurophysiologist and neuromuscular specialist, the primary focus of Dr Chakfe’s practice is to diagnose and manage patients with neuromuscular conditions no matter how complex they are. Some of the conditions he treats in his practice include motor neuron disease (e.g. Lou Gehrig disease) and autoimmune neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, neuropathy and muscle disease. Among other neurologic conditions he treats are Migraine and headaches, encephalopathies, memory disorders and Dementia, multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy and many others.
After obtaining his MD from Damascus University in Syria, Dr Chakfe pursued his academic career in neurologic research at the prominent Center for Research in Neuroscience and Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Montreal Canada; where he investigated mechanisms underlying normal and disease processes of the brain. He completed his graduate studies from the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery and obtained a Master of Science degree. His research was presented at international conferences and published in distinguished neuroscience journals.
Dr Chakfe then completed neurology residency training at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center followed by a fellowship training in clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular Medicine at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women Hospital and Harvard
Medical School where he was mentored by eminent leaders in the field. This outstanding training has enabled him to be a leader in the delivery of neurology and neuromuscular care in Central Florida.
Dr Chakfe is also an educator for future doctors who is actively involved in teaching University of Central Florida Medical students and Neurology Residents.
Dr Chakfe is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular Medicine. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and a fellow of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
Outside of the workplace, Dr Chakfe enjoys spending time with his family, visiting new places and learning about new cultures. He also enjoys cooking and barbecuing for family and friends. He and his teenage boys are staunch supporters of Orlando City Soccer Club.
